Alternative blooming of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae or Planktothrix agardhii induced by the timing of the critical nitrogen:phosphorus ratio in hypertrophic riverine lakes

چکیده
Großer Müggelsee and Langer See are limnologically similar but during an investigation from 1990 until 1993 marked differences were observed in the species that dominated during the summer blooms. Two distinct planktonic communities could be recognised, one dominated by ”Planktothrix agardhii” and the other by ”Aphanizomenon flos-aquae/Microcystis spp.”. A sensitive moment for the differentiation of the plankton development to the one or the other cyanobacterial summer bloom was the time, when the total nitrogen to total phosphorus ratio (TN:TP ratio) dropped to a critical value of 16:1. In addition, the phytoplankton composition at the time when this ratio is reached is of decisive importance. Rapid growth of the N2-fixing A. flos-aquae was favoured at TN:TP<16:1 in both lakes, when the timing of the critical TN:TP ratio and low biomass of P. agardhii coincided (clear water phase). Throughout all the investigated years in Großer Müggelsee, the rapid growth of the heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria A. flos-aquae started at the time when TN:TP=16:1, even if this critical ratio was delayed by several weeks. However, if P. agardhii biovolume exceeded 6 mm3 l-1 at the time when the critical TN:TP ratio was reached, then the mass development of this cyanobacteria continued during summer and into autumn, whereas A. flos-aquae were only present in traces. Therefore, A. flos-aquae reached high biovolumes only when TN:TP<16:1, while the growth of P. agardhii seemed to be independent of seasonal variation of the TN:TP ratio. Differences between ”P. agardhii” and ”A. flos-aquae/Microcystis spp.” dominated years were not restricted to cyanobacterial species, but were also seen in the diatom assemblages. A comparison, based on biovolumes of 15 dominant cyanobacteria and diatoms, showed that seasonal changes in phytoplankton in ”P. agardhii”-years were more gradual than the drastic shifts observed in ”A. flos-aquae/Microcystis spp.”-years. The seasonal dynamics of cyanobacterial and diatom assemblages in 11 water bodies along a mesoto hypertrophic gradient were compared. The cyanobacterial and diatom communities are characterised according to representative species of each algal class, selected by data reduction following principal component analyses and discriminant analysis. متن کاملDiversity of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (cyanobacterium) populations along a Baltic Sea salinity gradient.
Colony-forming cyanobacteria of the genus Aphanizomenon form massive blooms in the brackish water of the Baltic Sea during the warmest summer months. There have been recent suggestions claiming that the Baltic Sea Aphanizomenon species may be different from Aphanizomenon flos-aquae found in lakes. In this study, we examined variability in the morphology and 16S-23S rRNA internal transcribed spa...
متن کاملPhytoplankton-Specific Response to Enrichment of Phosphorus-Rich Surface Waters with Ammonium, Nitrate, and Urea
Supply of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) to the biosphere has tripled since 1960; however, little is known of how in situ response to N fertilisation differs among phytoplankton, whether species response varies with the chemical form of N, or how interpretation of N effects is influenced by the method of analysis (microscopy, pigment biomarkers). To address these issues, we conducted two 21-day in ...

Background: Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA) is a type of blue-green algae and contains a source of biological compounds. These microalgae have many beneficial health effects. Recently, fucoidan, known sulfated polysaccharide component of AFA algae, has been claimed to stimulate stem-cell mobilization in animal models. Stem cells play an essential role in tissue repair process. In this study, we ...
متن کاملEffects of trophic status on microcystin production and the dominance of cyanobacteria in the phytoplankton assemblage of Mediterranean reservoirs.
The aim of our study was to evaluate the abundance of cyanobacteria and microcystins in four Sardinian reservoirs (Italy) characterised by different trophic status to define a reference picture for future changes. Increasing levels of eutrophication and the abundance of cyanobacteria are expected to occur due to climate change, especially in the southern Mediterranean. Consequently, an in-depth...
